Dwight D. Eisenhower is quoted as saying that “Andrew Higgins is the man who won the war for us”. That war was World War II and Higgins is the man who designed the Landing Craft, Vehicle & Personnel (LCVP) and according to the National
WW II Museum, his New Orleans based boatyards built about 12,500 of them. Thousands more were built under license at other yards. As Eisenhower further stated, “If Higgin had not designed and built those LCVPs, we never could have landed
over an open beach. The whole strategy of the war would have been different.” LCVPs were famously used at the D-Day Normandy invasions, as well as North Africa, the Mediterranean and in the Pacific. The LCVPs were essentially simple designs
and made of plywood with ¼-inch special treated steel armor on the bow ramp and along the sides. Each boat measured 36 feet long with a beam of 11 feet and draft of 3 feet. Armament consisted of a pair of .30 caliber M1919 Browning machine
guns fitted in wells at the stern. The coxswain’s station was port-side of the engine compartment behind the cargo area. LCVPs had the capability to carry 36 troops, 6,000 pounds of vehicle cargo or 8,100 pounds of general cargo.

Black Cat Models produces a set of five 3D printed LCVPs that are quite detailed and easy to assemble. Each boat is comprised of the hull, a separate bow ramp and the machine guns. The hulls have deck tread ways, support ribbing and detailed
cockpits. The helm is also printed, so no photo-etch is required but they can easily break off if not carefully handled. Underneath, the keel with rudder and propeller are also printed, so again not PE needed. The bow ramps come in two styles: 3 with
the standard flat ribbed face and 2 with the reinforced diamond-shaped protrusion. The bow ramps have the large vision opening and tread ways on the inside face. Having the bow ramps printed separately will give you the option of building the LCVP
with either the ramp up or down. A total of 12 machine guns with shields are provided, which means you get two extra in case of damage or loss to the carpet monster. The ramps and guns come on a bar with small attachment points for easy
The Black Cat Models LCVPs are high-quality and very simple to build. They would be perfect for use in a beach head landing diorama, as cargo on a Liberty Ship or on a Buckley-class APD. My thanks to Ben Druel for providing the review
