Colorado Class Fighting Tops 1941, 3D Model Parts 1:700 Scale, Review by Steve Backer - Trumpeter has released 1:700 scale kits for West Virginia, Maryland, Tennessee and California in their 1941 fits with their lovely cagemasts and fighting tops. However, the kit supplied fighting tops have solid windows and you have to paint them to create an illusion of depth. The tops varied slightly between the two classes. 3D Model Parts has produced resin "Fighting Tops" for both classes. This shows those for the Colorado Class. You will instantly notice the open windows, ready to be glazed, and the lovely detail of these tops, which make an excellent upgrade for the plastic Trumpeter parts.
Tennessee Class Fighting Tops 1941, 3D Model Parts 1:700 Scale, Review by Steve Backer - Trumpeter has produced a USS California in her 1941 fit in 1:700 scale. The resin tops have a narrower profile than the Trumpeter plastic version and open windows.

USN Mk 37 AA Directors & Mk 51 Light AA Directors, 3D Model Parts 1:700 Scale - The Mk 37 director was the culmination of the evolution of gun directors in the USN in World War Two. First begun in 1936,the Mk 37 was first tested in 1939. For the first time the range finding mechanism was called a computer. The Mk 51 AA director could be found on almost every warship in the fleet at the end of the war. This small, visually operated system, played a significant role in reducing the threat of Kamikazes. With 3D Model Parts set U714 you get all of your USN AA director needs. The set provides four late model Mk 37 Mod 17 directors and sixteen Mk 51 directors. All parts are resin but there is no photo-etch for the actual radars for the Mk 37.

USN Aircraft Carrier Personnel Set #1, Black Cat Models 1:350 Scale, Review by Steve Backer - "Yikes! Take Cover! That idiot is going to plow into the stern!" No, your 1:350 pilot has not polished off a fifth of Jack Daniel's while waiting in the landing pattern to come aboard your carrier. The problem is with Paddles, which was the nickname for the Landing Signals Officer (LSO) in the US Navy. Given this nickname for the hand paddles the LSO used in signaling the alignment of an aircraft seeking to land safely aboard an aircraft carrier. If you don't have a LSO on your 1:350 scale carrier or he can't be easily seen by your pilots, your accident rate will go sky high and you may be relieved of command of your carrier by your wife for the carpet carnage caused. The answer is Black Cat Models set AC350049a, USN Carrier Personnel Set #1.

Cable Reels with Tubular/Flanged End Caps, Black Cat Models 1:350 Scale, Review by Steve Backer - Cable reels are a common fitting on the surface warship in any navy. When it comes to super-detailing a model warship the standard practise for cable reels is to use a brass photo-etch frame and cut a plastic rod for the reel. Thanks to Black Cat there is no longer any need to do this. These one-piece cable reels are the most detailed that I have ever seen.

Although it would be entirely appropriate to review a subject that was present for Operation Overlord, it is equally appropriate on June 6 to review a model warship from the location of the invasion, Normandy. L’Arsenal of Normandie, more specifically the Caen area, British AO for Monty and Operation Goodwood, now produces a resin and brass detailing set for the Heller La Fayette. Do you need one for your frigate, only you can answer that but the photographs of the new parts will speak for themselves. Review by Steve Backer.

In 1:200 scale the differences are stark. The Micro Master Royal Navy World War One pattern doors is an outstanding product.

USN Submarine Propellers, Mike Fuller 3D Printed Parts 1:350 Scale, Review by Tom Dougherty - Many modern submarine kits come with a small photo-etch fret that has the propeller (screw) represented by a flat photo-etch piece. While these can be made to look fairly decent if correctly curved by the model builder, there is now a much better alternative available, Mike Fuller 3D Printed 1:350 scale USN Propellers. A highly recommended product if you build submarine models in 1/350 scale.

USS Portland CA-33 Conversion Set For 1942 Fit, Model Monkey 1:350 Scale, Review by Steve Backer - Model Monkey refuses to let the Powerful Portland disappear into the mists of time. With the Model Monkey 1:350 scale Conversion Set for USS Portland CA-33, you can magically transform a humdrum plastic 1:350 scale Indianapolis into a dynamic Portland at her battling best in her 1942 fit, ready to take on the battleship Hiei off Guadalcanal.

USS Sargo Nameplate, Model Monkey, Review by Fleix Bustelo - Felix Bustelo was very satisfied with the 3D printed nameplate and it adds an excellent finishing touch to the display my Blue Ridge Models 1:350 scale USS Sargo model. The next time he needs a nameplate, he will certainly order one from Model Monkey.

HMS Hood Funnel Upgrades, Model Monkey 1:350 Scale for the Trumpeter Kit, Review by Steve Backer - In IPMS competition, the lesser Hoods will skeedaddle back to Scapa Flow when they see the magnificent Model Monkey funnels on your Hood and the Bismarck, gangway, its back to Kiel. The Model Monkey 1:350 scale HMS Hood funnels are highly recommended to get the best out of your Trumpeter kit.
USS Arizona Control Tops, Model Monkey 1:200 Scale for the Trumpeter Kit Review by Steve Backer - With the Model Monkey Arizona control tops, you get rivet by rivet detail and not just a blank, featureless face. Take a look at the detail around the numerous windows on the three stories of each top. Look at the diagonal and horizontal of the lowest level of both tops. You will have to snip off the casting points and sand of any remnants but that is a small price to pay to get these beauties on your Arizona.
USS Arizona Control Tops, Model Monkey 1:350 Scale, Review by Felix Bustelo - The Model Monkey USS Arizona fore and main tops are superior to the Banner kit parts and are a must to build a quality model from that kit. The gray resin material makes using these upgrade parts even more attractive.
USN Mk. 38 Main Gun Director, Model Monkey 1:700 Scale, Review by Steve Backer - The Mk. 38 main gun director was the key component of directing the fire of the 16-inch guns of the USN battleships in World War Two. Starting in November 1942 when USS Washington took on the Japanese battleship Kirishima in an night action off of Guadalcanal, the Mk. 38 proved its worth. Model Monkey has produced a set of eight Mk. 38s of gray resin in 1:700 scale, which replaces kit supplied parts.
Ticonderoga Class Mast, For the Dragon Kit, Model Monkey 1:350 Scale, Review by Felix Bustelo - The Model Monkey Ticonderoga class CG mast is a welcome replacement part for the Dragon 1:350 scale plastic kit of the Ticonderoga Class guided missile cruiser, no matter which iteration you may have.
USS Ticonderoga CG-47 Bridge, For the Dragon Kit, Model Monkey 1:350 Scale, Review by Felix Bustelo - The Ticonderoga class CG pilot house for the Dragon 1:350 scale kit is a welcome replacement for the plastic kit, no matter which iteration you may have.
USS Interpid, Angle Deck Essex Class Replacement Island Decks, Model Monkey 1:350 Scale, Review by Steve Backer - At long last there is a large scale kit of an angle deck modernization of an Essex Class aircraft carrier with the USS Intrepid in 1:350 scale from Gallery Models. Sure, you can still build those ancient stalwarts, the Revell Essex in multiple incarnations or the Renwal Shangi La but why not grab the gusto with the Gallery Intrepid? While you are at it, you can greatly complement the Intrpid kit with a superb set of replacement island decks from Model Monkey.
USS Pennsylvania Control Tops, Model Monkey 1:350 Scale, Review by Steve Backer - Model Monkey has the perfect solution for the control tops for either USS Pennsylvania or USS Arizona in 1:350 scale. These one-piece resin control tops are an elegant, clean, and outstanding solution to replace the plastic parts in the Banner/HobbyBoss Arizona kit.
USS Lionfish SS-298 Sail/Fairwater, Model Monkey 1:350 Scale, Review by Felix Bustelo - The Lionfish fairwater is a welcome addition to the growing Model Monkey catalog and will save the modeler the trouble of having to scratch-build one if you wish to model a Balao class submarine that had a similar fairwater.
USS Pennsylvania BB-38 Funnel 1936-1942, Model Monkey 1:350 Scale, Review by Steve Backer - I find that the Model Monkey USS Pennsylvania funnel in 1:350 scale is a superb product for replacing the funnel in the HobbyBoss/Banner Arizona kit. The contrast between the outstanding Model Monkey funnel and the poor kit-supplied funnel is stark.
USS Arizona Funnel 1936-1941, Model Monkey 1:350 Scale, Review by Felix Bustelo - Now how to paint your USS Arizona model is a subject for an at times heated debate. However, there should be no debate that you must get your hands on Model Monkey’s 1936-1941 funnel for you build.
USN Mk 19 Directors, Model Monkey 1:350 Scale, Review by Steve Backer - As Steve Larsen, Major Domo of Model Monkey, has so pithily stated, "The Banner/Mini Hobby Models kit's directors are little more than plastic blobs." Perhaps that is the reason that Steve buckled on his CAD assault suit and whipped up accurate USN Mk 19 Directors in 1:350 scale.
Arizona Turrets, Model Monkey 1:350 Scale, Review by Felix Bustelo - The USS Arizona turrets in 1:350 scale are just one of many parts designed by Model Monkey to improve the Arizona kit and there are even parts to convert the kit to a Pennsylvania in different fits. The triple 14” turrets can also be used on the Iron Shipwrights kits of the USS Nevada and Oklahoma if you so wish. The turrets from Model Monkey will certainly improve the plastic kit, whatever label you may have, and are recommended.
USS Pennsylvania Superstructure December 7, 1941, Model Monkey 1:350 Scale, Review by Steve Backer - The Model Monkey USS Pennsylvania 1941 superstructure is a high quality design, designed to replace the plastic parts of the plastic USS Arizona 1:350 scale model released by HobbyBoss/Banner. These parts, along with other Model Monkey Pennsylvania parts, open the door to new horizons for this kit.

MT Miniatures

Blackburn Buccaneer, British Attack Bomber, MT Miniatures 1:700 Scale - MT Miniatures produces two versions of the Buccaneer in 1:700 scale made with spun white metal. They come three to a bag and need some clean up of metal flash before painting.
De Havilland DH-110 Sea Vixen, FAA Two Seat All-Weather Fighter, MT Miniatures 1:700 Scale - The de Havilland DH-110 Sea Vixen was deployed in squadron service in July 1959 and flew with the FAA until 1972 when the Sea Vixen was replaced by the F-4 Phantom II. MT Miniatures produces white metal 1:700 scale Sea Vixens with three to a package. The castings do require so clean up but they do present an opportunity to decorate the decks of post war RN carriers.

USS Tunny SSG-282, Regulus Missile Submarine Conversion Set, Mulsanne's Corner 1:350 Scale, Review by Felix Bustelo - The USS Tunny SSG-282 Conversion set is an excellent example of a 3-D printed accessory. With this set you can transform an AFV Club 1:350 scale Gato class fleet boat into one of the pioneering missile carrying submarines, which visually was quite an oddity. The conversion set requires the cutting and removal of parts, so I would recommend it to someone with intermediate modelling skills

USS Smith DD-17 Weapons Set, Nautilus Models 1:200 Scale, Review by Steve Backer - If you already have the Chuan Yu 1:200 scale model of the first Flivver, USS Smith DD-17, or are thinking about getting one, the Nautilus Models USS Smith DD-17 Weapons Set is essential. The 3D printed 3-inch guns are two-piece, rather than the one-piece guns in the kit. You get anchors for the model, which are lacking in the kit. There are eye-popping twin torpedo tubes with the set that are used for a 1916 fit of the Smith. This set from Nautilus is a must have for anyone that has the kit.
USS Gurnard SS-254, Gato Class Fall 1942 Conversion Set, Nautilus Models 1:144 Scale - In Nautilus Models continuing quest to provide unusual conversion sets to provide further interesting and unusual variations of injected plastic kits, the USS Gurnard 1:144 scale presents another good example. With this conversion set, the USS Gurnard with a new 4-inch deck gun and fore and aft Oerlikon 20mm AA gun platforms on the sail, the set allows the modeler to represent the first upgrade of the gun armament of the Gato class.

Shipping Crates, Niko Models 1:350 Scale, Review by Felix Bustelo - These sets would look great in a dockside scene waiting to be loaded on to a Liberty Ship or a peacetime scene with cargo ship or liner. You will probably need to buy a few sets in order to fill up the dock properly but they are relatively inexpensive.
Engineering Equipment, Niko Models 1:350 Scale, Review by Felix Bustelo - These little engineer machines could be used in many diorama scenes: dockside being loaded on a Liberty Ship or even working on the docks or in a Seabees vignette clearing ground for an airstrip on a Pacific atoll. These little Niko trucks are a quick and relatively inexpensive way to add a little life to scene.

North Star Models
Royal Navy Bridge Equipment, North Star Models 1:350 Scale, Review by Felix Bustelo- The North Star Models 1:350 scale Royal Navy Bridge Equipment set is interesting and can be used to add detail or replace kit parts for some larger Royal Navy ships like a cruiser or larger, as they would be fitted with the larger air-defense officer’s sights. The smaller items would be suitable for smaller ships, like destroyers or frigates, as well as their larger counterparts.
Kriegsmarine Figures, North Star Models 1:350 Scale, Review by Felix Bustelo - The level of detail found on the North Star Models 1:350 scale Kriegsmarine figures is like nothing I have seen in crew figures and certainly raises the level. I am pretty sure that I do not have the skill level to paint these figures in such a way to take advantage of it. I just don’t know if I can paint the buttons on the officer uniforms or the eagle on the crew caps gold and pick out other details to do them justice but I am willing to try.

Curtiss C-46 Commando Military Transport, SSN Modellbau 1:350 Scale, Review by Felix Bustelo - Overall the Curtiss C-46 Commando by SSN Modellbau in 1:350 scale is a very well done kit which is a simple build and looks good when completed. Aircraft in 1:350 scale really belong in a diorama and this is a perfect subject to build a scene around. With the different marking options, you could also place a C-46 in a Marine airstrip on an island or in post-war Alaskan setting.
Multiple Ejector Racks with Mk. 82 Bombs, SSN Modellau 1:350 Scale, Review by Felix Bustelo -vThis set will nicely complement an air wing on the deck of a model of a 1:350 scale modern U.S. Navy carrier be it the old Tamiya Enterprise and Trumpeter Nimitz CVN or the more recent Intrepid from Gallery Models and John F. Kennedy from Merit International.
USN Ordnance Trolleys, SSN Modellbau 1:350 Scale, Review by Steve Backer - Now you don't have to tie up aircraft elevators and constipate the flight cycle by moving aircraft from the flight deck to the hangar to load new ordnance. With SSN Modellbau's USN Ordnance Trolleys, set F 350-08, you can use the small ordnance elevators to move the ordnance to the aircraft on the flight deck.
USN Large Bollards, SSN Modellbau 1:350Scale, Review by Felix Bustelo - The USN Large Bollard set by SSN Modellbau in 1:350 scale is a good set which provides enough bitts to fit one aircraft carrier or battleship model, with maybe a few left over. They are a big improvement to those found on most plastic kits and on some resin kits, if they have any to begin with.
Dry Dock, SSN Modellbau 1:350 Scale, Review by Felix Bustelo - Overall this is a very well done set that is unique in the ship modeling world, at least in this scale. You can have a dry dock diorama incorporating a rather large ship. If the Ultimate Set s is too much dry dock for your needs, a Standard Set with fewer parts is also available that will let you build one that measures 26.57 inches (675mm) long and 6.50 inches (165mm) wide.
PBM Mariner Flying Boat, SSN Modelbau 1:350 Scale, Review by Felix Bustelo - Overall, the SSN Modellbau PBM Mariner in 1:350 Scale is a very well done kit which can be built standalone but really deserves to be in a diorama setting. The kit provides options but it is ultimately up to the modeler to decide how they wish to display this little gem.

Essex 27C Class Angled Deck Carrier Hangar Deck Set for the Revell Kit, Starfighter Decals 1:540 Scale, Review by Steve Backer - The Starfighter Essex 27C Class Hangar Deck set, as well as other Starfighter products, are highly recommended to breath new life into that Revell Lazarus, the 1:540 scale USS Essex Class plastic kit. The kit has been around since the 1950s but it looks as fresh as today with these Starfighter products.
Phantom II F4 Aircraft, Starfighter Decals 1:500 Scale - Does your Revell or Aurora box scale USS Forrestal still carry blob shaped Cougars or Cutlasses? Do you need to ramp up to some more competent, capable and most importantly, more detailed air platforms? Starfighter Decals has the answer in the form of their PRO-8 set, which includes four F4 Phantom II aircraft in 1:500 scale. Included are resin parts and decals for two Phantoms with wings extended and two with wing tips raised.
Crusader F8U, The Last Gun Fighter, Starfighter Decals' Resin Aircraft 1:540 Scale - The 1956 Revell Forrestal surely could have used some Crusaders, the hottest fighter in 1960. You still can find the early Revell kits of Forrestal and Essex class carriers at somewhat reasonable prices and now you can add all the Crusaders you want with Starfighter Models Pro1 set of resin 1:540 scale Crusaders. Each pack comes with six aircraft, plus decal sheet.
Big Oily Beasts, Douglas A-1 Skyraiders, Starfighter Decals' Resin Aircraft 1:540 Scale - Big Oily Beasts, these resin aircraft models of the Douglas A-1 Skraiders come with excellent decals and are designed to populate your Revell 1:540 scale carrier decks with Crazy Water Buffaloes. These Able Dogs will certainly outshine any of the kit supplied aircraft in markings alone. With Starfighter Pro2 A-1 Skyraiders you to can join ATKRON-145 in a rousing chorus of "Spads Forever".

Lightning P-38 & Thunderbolt P-47 Deck Cargo, Toms Modelworks 1:350 Scale - All right Gyrenes! I know! Your tried and true F4Fs just don’t have the range to reach up to Bougainville to go after Yamamoto. What we need for this mission is a bird with long legs. What we need for this mission is a bird that packs a punch. What we need for this mission is the Lockheed Lightning. Since neither the USN nor the USMC operates them, we’ll have to call in the USAAF pukes! Call in the Lightnings! Toms Modelworks now supplies two P-38s and two P-47s in a special set, TMWD006, as deck cargo for the 1:350 scale Liberty Ship models.
Armored Fighting Vehicle (AFV) & Soft Skin Vehicles from WWII, Tom's Modelworks 1:350 Scale - Whatever your World War Two cargo needs, Tom's Modelworks probably has something that you are looking for with either or both of these 1:350 scale accessory packets. One is TMWD004 and consists of Armored Fighting Vehicles (AFV) although a couple of soft skin Jeeps are thrown in. The second package TMWD005 is labeled as soft skin vehicles, although as with the hard skin vehicle package, it is a mixed bag in that it includes a few armored vehicles like the M-8 & M-20 armored cars and the White Scout Car.

Breguet Br. 521 Bizerte Flying Boat, U-Boat Laboratorium 1:350 Scale, Review by Felix Bustelo - Despite my criticisms with the kit, the U-Boat Laboratorium Breguet Br.521 Bizerte will build into a detailed little representation of this flying boat but it will require some effort. The waterline version can be used in a diorama setting or on its own in a seascape and you can build the full-hull version mounted on a brass rod for display.
