Studebaker US6 (G630) Fuel Tanker, Niko Model 1:350 Scale, Review by Felix Bustelo - The Studebaker US6 Fuel

Niko’s line of resin vehicles that are very useful for dioramas. They are available at
various retailers that are SteelNavy sponsors. Added to the

HNoMS Fridtjof Nansen F310 Frigate, Dodo Models 1:700 Scale, Review by Ayala Botto - The HNoMS Fridtjof
Nansen
F310 Frigate by Dodo Models in 1:700 scale has a stunning and superior casting quality, with a sharply rendered
decal sheet, that together with a high detailed and complete photo-etch set, and provides a fantastic chance to all
modellers. Added to the
Destroyer Reviews Section.

USS Missouri, Tamiya 1:350 Scale, Built by Kostas Katseas - This the Tamiya 1/350 scale USS Missouri built by

Breguet Br. 521 Bizerte Flying Boat, U-Boat Laboratorium 1:350 Scale, Review by Felix Bustelo - Despite my
criticisms with the kit, the
U-Boat Laboratorium Breguet Br.521 Bizerte will build into a detailed little representation of
this flying boat but it will require some effort. The waterline version can be used in a diorama setting or on its own in a
seascape and you can build the full-hull version mounted on a brass rod for display. Added to the
Fittings and
Equipment Reviews Section.
3 December 2015
Five-Inch/51 Surface Action Gun, 3D Models 1:700 Scale - The Five-Inch/51 gun was the was the standard secondary
gun for the USN battleship designs prior to World War Two. It was also mounted on some  aircraft carriers.
3D Model
Parts
has reproduced the 5-in/51 in 1:700 scale. The label on the photographs is wrong in that the 5-Inch/51 was for
surface action only, as the 5-Inch/25 was the prewar DP gun. Added to the
Ordnance Reviews Section.
2 December 2015
Dodo Models - SteelNavy is happy to welcome Dodo Models as a sponsor. Started in 2015 Dodo produces high quality
multimedia kits of rather exotic modern combatants. Take a look at
HMAS Armidale. Rated a patrol ship, the Armidale
looks more like a sleek yacht with a serious attitude. Four 1:700 scale kits have already been released and more are to
follow in 2016, as well as kits in 1:350 scale. The
Dodo Models link has been added to the main page.
1 December 2015

HMS Naiad, Dido Class Light Cruiser, Flyhawk Model 1:700 Scale, Review by Rob Brown - This is a highly
recommended kit, and it will make a splendid addition to any collection. Royal Navy enthusiasts have waited a very long
time for an injection molded
Dido (or any RN cruiser for that matter) in 1/700 and Flyhawk is to be heartily
congratulated for providing such a well-researched and well-engineered kit. One can only hope for more! Added to the
Cruiser Reviews Section.
29 November 2015

the
Cruiser Gallery.
27 November 2015
SS Clearpool, British Tramp Steamer, Loose Cannon Models 1:700 Scale, Review by Felix Bustelo - The SS Clearpool
in 1:700 scale is a fair kit that is a tad under-whelming in my opinion when compared to some of the other offerings I
have seen from
Loose Cannon. I would categorize this kit a basic offering that will need some extra effort to build into a
more detailed model. How much you wish to put into it is up to you, but you do have a good basis with which to work.
Added to the
Auxiliary Reviews Section.
23 November 2015
Curtiss Seagull SOC-3 Seaplane, Admiralty Modelworks 1:200 Scale, Review by Felix Bustelo - Overall the
Admiralty Curtiss Seagull SOC-3 in 1:200 scale is a very good set that will help a modeler to back date the 1:200 scale
Arizona kit or convert it to a Pennsylvania for the same time period. Added to the Fittings and Equipment Reviews
Section.
22 November 2015
HMS King George V 1941-1942, Tamiya with Pontos Models Detail Set 1:350 Scale, Built by Kostas Katseas - Kostas

British battleship in her 1941-1942 fit. Added to the
Battleship Gallery.
21 November 2015
PBM Mariner Flying Boat, SSN Modelbau 1:350 Scale, Review by Felix Bustelo - Overall, the SSN Modellbau PBM
Mariner
in 1:350 Scale is a very well done kit which can be built standalone but really deserves to be in a diorama setting.
The kit provides options but it is ultimately up to the modeler to decide how they wish to display this little gem. Added to
the
Fittings & Equipment Reviews Section.
20 November 2015
Volga, Soviet Spy Trawler, Revell 1:142 Scale, Built by Mark Leonard - This is Mark Leonard's build of the Revell
Spy Trawler ‘

enjoyable, low-pressure job, very relaxing to do. Added to the
Auxiliary Gallery.
14 November 2015
Charles De Gaulle, French Aircraft Carrier, Heller 1:400 Scale, Built by Alessio Mugnoz -  Alessio Mugnoz built the
French nuclear aircraft carrier
Charles De Gaulle. The kit is the Heller 1:400 scale. Alessio wanted it to be Radio/
Controlled but it is too heavy and does not float as it should. Added to the
Aircraft Carrier Gallery.
10 November 2015
USS West Virginia 1945, Trumpeter 1:700 Scale, Built by Bobo Cicconi - This is the Trumpeter 1/700 scale USS West
Virginia
1945. Bob Cicconi used Tom's, White Ensign, and Gold Medal photo-etch details, Nano Dread 40 mm guns,
and brass barrels. Rigging was stretched sprue and Lifecolor paints. A nice kit with only a few minor problems. Added to
the
Battleship Gallery.

USS Missouri BB-11 1912 Fit, Samek 1:700 Scale, Review by Steve Backer - The Samek USS Missouri BB-11 in 1912
fit shows the shift after replacement of the military masts with cage masts. It is a good, solid kit with variable options for
searchlight platforms and tops for the cage masts. Added to the
Battleship Reviews Section.
15 October 2015
Kinu, Japanese Light Cruiser, Aoshima 1:350 Scale, Built by Rick Cotton - This is Rick Cotton's 1/350th scale
Aoshima kit of the IJN light cruiser,

Gallery.
11 October 2015
USS Indiana, AMPCO 1:500 Scale 1940, Tom Ratliff Collection - This is an AMPCO Indiana circa 1940 in 1:500
Scale. It is definitely an AMPCO kit because the 5 inch guns are exactly like their
Savannah. They made a bunch of stuff
in 1940 competing with Ideal Toy Company. Add to the
1930s Models Gallery.
9 October 2015
RN Zara, Italian Heavy Cruiser, 1:200 Scale, Scratch-Built by Shuki Aloni - This is the scratch-built RN Zara, Italian

Gremyashchiy, Imperial Russian Gunboat 1893, Combrig 1:700 Scale, Review by Felix Bustelo - The Gremyashchiy in
1:700 scale is another basic bare-bones offering from
Combrig that out of the box builds into a simple but fairly accurate
model of
Gremyashchiy. As always, there is plenty of room for the modeler to improve and detail the model to their heart’
s content. Added to the
Destroyer Reviews Section.
26 September 2015

same color as the rest of the ship. Added to the
Battleship Gallery.
24 September 2015
Small Vladivostok Destroyers, Pernov, Reval, Ussuri & Yanchihe Classes, Combrig 1:700 Scale, Review by Felix
Bustelo - This is a basic bare-bones offering from Combrig but you do get four models in one box. Out of the box you
will have simple representations of the torpedo boats but you can detail them as much as your skill and desire will lead
you. Added to the
Destroyer Reviews Section.
18 September 2015
Shipping Crates, Niko Models 1:350 Scale, Review by Felix Bustelo - These sets would look great in a dockside
scene waiting to be loaded on to a Liberty Ship or a peacetime scene with cargo ship or liner. You will probably need to
buy a few sets in order to fill up the dock properly but they are relatively inexpensive. Added to the
Fittings &
Equipment Reviews Section.
14 September 2015
Mikasa Wooden Deck Set, KA-Models 1:350 Scale, Review by Felix Bustelo - Some modelers prefer to paint the decks
but others want a more natural look and avoid painting altogether. This set from MK1 Design will certainly make those in
the latter camp very happy. Added to the
Fittings & Equipment Reviews Section.
12 September 2015
HMS Warspite Leaving Harbor, Trumpeter 1:700 Scale, Diorama by Kostas Katseas - A diorama that Kostas Katseas
always wanted to have a try at was the
HMS Warspite leaving a port in Med (Kostas admits that he had Malta's Grand
Harbour in mind) overlooked by the medieval castle. The
Warspite and Liberty Ship are from Trumpeter with the
lighthouse from
Orange Hobby. Added to the Diorama Gallery.
11 September 2015
Engineering Equipment, Niko Models 1:350 Scale, Review by Felix Bustelo - These little engineer machines could be
used in many diorama scenes: dockside being loaded on a Liberty Ship or even working on the docks or in a Seabees
vignette clearing ground for an airstrip on a Pacific atoll. Whatever you have in mind, these sets from
Niko Models will
fit the bill. Added to the
Fittings & Equipment Reviews Section.
7 September 2015
Walrus, Dutch Attack Submarine, Naval Models 1:350 Scale, Review by Felix Bustelo - This Walrus kit from Naval
Models should build a good representation of the any of the four newest submarines of the Koninklijke Marine without
much effort. If you are a fan of modern submarines, this model would make an interesting addition to your fleet. Added
to the
Submarine Reviews Section.
6 September 2015
USS Gerald R. Ford CVN-78, 3D Prinited 1:1250 Scale, Built by Kostas Katseas - This is entirely 3D printed along with
the planes, deck tractors, etc. Hence it is not metal, and a bit rough at places but that is noticeable more in the close up
images  than with the naked eye, as
Kostas Katseas did a lot of sanding and smoothing in places. Added to the Aircraft
Carrier Gallery.
5 September 2015
Zwaardvis, Dutch Attack Submarine, Naval Models 1:350 Scale, Review by Felix Bustelo - The Zwaardvis kit from
Naval Models helps to fill a void in
Felix Bustelo's fleet of modern submarines and with not too much effort should build
into a good model of the either boat in the class. The
Zwaardvis was an important evolutionary step in Dutch submarine
design and a good example of a conventional attack submarine. Added to the
Submarine Reviews Section.
28 August 2015
Udarnyi, Soviet River Monitor, Samek 1:350 Scale, Review by Felix Bustelo - While there were some hiccups with this
build for reasons both within and not within the control of
Felix Bustelo, this is a pretty good kit of an off-beat subject.
Ships like this did play a role in World War II and while not as sexy as battleships or even destroyers, they do make for
an interesting model. Added to the
Destroyer and Small Combatant Reviews Section.
23 August 2015
HMS Valiant, Trumpeter 1:700 Scale, Built by Kostas Katseas - Kostas Katseas stays with the Royal Navy with his

USS Nautilus, Mikro-Mir 1:350 Scale, Review by Felix Bustelo - The Mikro-Mir Nautilus kit is the only
injection-molded plastic kit of this important submarine. Some modelers prefer plastic to resin and up to now the only
other kits of this subject in this scale are in the latter medium and produced by
Blue Ridge Models and Combat Subs.
Added to the
Submarine Reviews Section.
8 August 2015

JMSDF Yushio, Pitroad 1:350 Scale, Build Review by Felix Bustelo - Overall the Pitroad Yushio was a simple, fun and
relatively quick build. The fit and detail is generally very good out of the box. This makes for a nice addition to my
modern submarine collection and if you can pick one up I would recommend it if you are a fan of JMSDF ships or
modern subs. Added to the
Submarine Reviews Section.

6 July 2015
Ise, Japanese Battleship/Aircraft Carrier 1944, Fujimi 1:350 Scale, Review by Steve Backer - The Imperial Japanese
Battleship Aircraft Carrier
Ise at the Battle of Leyte Gulf was one tough old hermaphrodite, as Samuel Eliot Morison called
her. No one would accuse the
Ise as just another pretty face but the Fujimi 1:350 scale model of the Ise is one beautiful
kit. Added to the
Battleship Reviews Section.
5 July 2015

USN Mk 37 AA Directors & Mk 51 Light AA Directors, 3D Model Parts 1:700 Scale - The Mk 37 director was the
culmination of the evolution of gun directors in the USN in World War Two. First begun in 1936,the Mk 37 was first
tested in 1939. For the first time the range finding mechanism was called a computer. The Mk 51 AA director could be
found on almost every warship in the fleet at the end of the war. This small, visually operated system, played a significant
role in reducing the threat of Kamikazes. With
3D Model Parts set U714 you get all of your USN AA director needs. The
set provides four late model Mk 37 Mod 17 directors and sixteen Mk 51 directors. All parts are resin but there is no
photo-etch for the actual radars for the Mk 37. Added to the
Fittings and Equipment Reviews Section.

USS Enterprise CV-6 1944, Trumpeter 1:350 Scale, Built by Kostas Katseas - No, Trumpeter doesn't produce a USS

NNT covers everything from soup to
nuts. On to Beijing, its time to go after those pesky Boxers! Added to the

Schnellboot S7, E-Boat, Airfix 1:72 Scale, Built by Joseph Passaseo - After carefully reviewing the Airfix 1:72 scale
Schnellboot/E-Boat kit, the goal of
Joseph Passaseo was to build it into a credible representation of the early class
Schnellboot S-7. Many of the kit parts were discarded and new ones built and as well as re-detailing and correcting many
of the parts. Added to the
Destroyer Gallery.

Nagara, Japanese Light Cruiser, Photo-Etch Set Flyhawk Model 1:350 Scale - For some, the Flyhawk photo-etch set
for the Aoshima
Nagara in 1:350 scale may be considered overkill, with so many fiddly parts but to others this set is all
that and a bag of chips.  If you fall somewhere in between you have plenty of parts to choose from and to decide what
you want to use depending on your comfort level and skill level. I will most likely opt out of using the degaussing cables.
The bottom line is that the Flyhawk detail set will go a long way to enhance the Aoshima kit and it is a lot easier to obtain
than the Aoshima detail-up sets. Added to the
1:350 Scale Photo-Etch Section.

USS Nevada 1945, H-P Model 1:700 Scale, Built by Bob Cicconi - This is the 1/700 scale HP Model kit of USS Nevada

JMSDF Murasame Photo-Etch Set, MK1 by KA Models 1:350 Scale, Review by Felix Bustelo - Felix Bustelo's opinion
is that the JMSDF
Murasame photo-etch set is a very complete and well designed set by MK1 Design that will go a long
way to detail to a good kit. Added to the
1:350 Scale Photo-Etch Reviews Section.

Sino-Japanese Naval War 1894-1995 by Piotr Olender, Review by Felix Bustelo - This Sino-Japanese War is rather
obscure and overshadowed by the Russo-Japanese War.  However it is an important event in the history of the Pacific
and the first step in Japan’s military and geographic expansion in the region that culminated in World War II. This book is
recommended to anyone who is interested in the subject matter. Added to the
Book Reviews Section.

Amur, High Speed Minelayer 1901, Imperial Russian Navy, Combrig 1:350 Scale, Review by Felix Bustelo - The
Amur is another good release from Combrig though there are some issues. It is good to see another ship from the
ill-fated Imperial Russian Navy and one that was very handsome. Added to the
Auxiliary Reviews Section.

Edward VII
.  It was built in his regular 1/550 scale based upon drawings in the Burt British predreadnought book and
Russian drawings that he found on the Internet. Greg took a long break in the middle of the build, so it took 6 months to
complete. Added to the
Battleship Gallery.

3D Model Parts - SteelNavy is pleased to welcome 3D Model Parts as a sponsor of SteelNavy. Photo-etch parts are
great but when you are building a 1:700 scale warship but what about the Oerlikons. The plastic Oerlikons are too clunky
but photo-etch Oerlikons may lack three dimensional impact. The answer is
3D Model Parts Oerlikons, pedestal mount
singles, tripod mount singles, twin Oerlikons or how about .50 water cooled machine guns carried by the ships at Pearl
Harbor? Whether it is Oerlikons, Bofors, Pom-Poms, Quad Vickers, 5-inch mounts and even fighting tops for Pearl
Harbor battleships,
3D Model Parts has a wide array of low cost parts to enhance your build. 3D Model Parts icon/link

Les Porte-Avions Clemenceau et Foch, Navires & Historie Hors-Serie No. 22, Review by Felix Bustelo -
The CAD images and photos are a dream come true for modelers who have one of the venerable 1/400 scale Heller kits
of these carriers and wish to super-detail them. I know I have one buried in my stash so it may make its way to the
workbench now that I have this great reference. Added to the
Book Reviews Section.

USS West Virgnia, Waveline 1:700 Scale, Built by Kostas Katseas - Kostas Katseas took the USS West Virginia resin

USS Virginia BB-13 1909-1911, Samek 1:700 Scale, Review by Steve Backer - Samek provides the only model that
portrays the
Virginia class in the fit used by three of the class. USS Virginia, USS Nebraska and USS Rhode Island
were refitted with a fore cage mast and kept a military style main mast in the refit received after completing their cruise
around the world with the Great White Fleet. Resin and brass parts are provided to model this unique fit of the class.

HMS Victoria, British Battleship 1893, Combrig 1:350 Scale, Review by Felix Bustelo - Overall the HMS Victoria in
1:350 scale is a good release from Combrig though there are a few relatively minor issues.
Felix Bustelo really likes that
this time Combrig went with a Victorian Era Royal Navy ship and he hopes that they will do some others as there are
some pretty cool subjects from which to choose. Added to the
Battleship Reviews Section.

I-19 Japanese Submarine, Aoshima 1:350 Scale, Review by Felix Bustelo - The Aoshima I-19 kit is in my opinion very,
very good. The details are nicely done and abundant and it appears to be a well-engineered kit. Some aspects of the
assembly instructions could have been better but out of the box it will build into a fine model. The additional of separately
available optional photo-etch parts will certainly enhance the model but it isn’t required. The fact that these sets were not
bundled with the kit may irk some but then again it is not uncommon for plastic kits not to have any photo-etch and rely
on aftermarket sets to detail a model. Added to the
Submarine Reviews Section.

Replenishment Underway, Diorama in 1:1250 Scale by Kostas Katseas - Kostas Katseas worked up this drama with

Ticonderoga. Added to the Diorama Gallery.

USS Enterprise CVN-65, Tamiya 1:350 Scale, Built by James Jacob - James Jacob started building the USS
Enterprise
CVN-65 from Tamiya in 1:350 scale after receiving it for a birthday present in 2009. In addition to the kit
itself, he has supplemented it by purchasing several Trumpeter 1:350 scale aircraft kits, mainly Hawkeyes', F-14D
Tomcats, Intruders and assorted helicopters. Added to the
Carrier Gallery.

Type 056 Corvette, NATO Jiangdao Class, Bronco Models 1:350 Scale, Review by Felix Bustelo - Overall the Bronco
Models
Type 056 Corvette appears to be a good kit, though a bit over engineered and with some detailed subassemblies
that will not really be visible once the model is assembled. The incorrect flight deck netting continues to be a source of
frustration. It should build up into a good replica of the newest class of corvette in the People’s Liberation Army Navy.

Elco 80' PT Boat, Merit 1:48 Scale, Review by Bob Cicconi - Despite a few rather minor glitches and discrepancies,
Bob Cicconi is very impressed with the kit overall and enjoyed building it.  Even a novice can make this kit into an
impressive finished product merely by following the instructions carefully and taking time to dry-fit the components
before assembly. Added to the
Destroyer Reviews Section.

SMS Fürst Bismarck, Imperial German Armored Cruiser, NNT 1:700 Scale, Built by Norbert Thiel - This model of

Prinz Eugen 1941, Trumpeter 1:350 Scale, Built by Louis Carabott - The Prinz Eugen by Trumpeter in 1:350 scale
comes in the 1945 fit but
Louis Carabott wanted to model this beautiful ship in the Baltic scheme and had to go for the
Rheinebung Operation in 1941. Added to the

BKA 1125, Soviet River Monitor, Zvezda 1:350 Scale, Review by Felix Bustelo - The BKA 1125 was not a very
complex boat as it was essentially a floating tank. With work and the addition of some aftermarket photo-etch doors,
railings and other details, it could build up into a decent model of a
BKA 1125 and considering the price (about $5.00) it
could be a good model to try your hand at working with basic photo-etch. Added to the
Destroyer & Small
Combatants Reviews Section.
